Autumn: First half-term
We have had a great start to the year, the children have settled well and have really grown in confidence and are showing great eagerness to learn. We have been exploring our new classroom and have become independent in selecting resources and using our imaginations to create art, build models and make up role play games.

In maths, we are exploring number and have come up with some counting rules to help us count accurately. In Reception we are getting quicker at learning number patterns on tens frames and this is helping us to see number bonds to 10.

The reception children love our trips to the woods where we have been collecting different materials, picking blackberries and making dens. These Forest School sessions enable the children to develop social, emotional and physical skills, build their resilience and use their creativity and imagination.

In our R.E topic ‘Myself’, we have been learning about how God loves us and he gave us a special name. We have also learnt about the Jewish celebration of Hanukah and the Hindu festival of Diwali.

Our first school trip to ‘Gymnies’ at Aylestone leisure centre was a great success and all the children got the opportunity to climb, run and jump on some lovely equipment.

We have been focusing on Phase 1 phonics and our general listening attention skills. Nursery continue to focus on phase 1 throughout the year whereas reception are nearly ready to start Phase 2. We are fostering a love for reading by sharing a story together every day and we really enjoyed welcoming in a storyteller from the library who gave us all a free book to take home.

Autumn: Second half-term
This half term in Reception we have started our phase 2 phonics and are making great progress in reading and writing. The children really enjoy ‘helicopter stories’ where an adult scribes their story and then we all act it out on our ‘stage’. This has led to great progress in children’s story telling and imagination skills and sparked a passion for writing.

In R.E we have covered the topic ‘Welcome’ and have enjoyed learning about Baptism and how this is when we were welcomed into the church. It was lovely to have a parent bring in their new baby for us to act out a Baptism in the Chapel. We have now moved on to our new topic ‘Advent’ and are talking about how Christmas is Jesus’s birthday.

In Reception we are well into our number studies and the children are developing their oral reasoning and problem solving skills. We have been starting to explore 2D and 3D shapes and are beginning to use mathematical language to describe them.

All the children in Early Years have put on a fantastic performance for the Nativity play. They worked hard learning their words and it was fantastic to see so many parents here to watch. We also went down to Amberwood care home to sing songs for the residents, they were delighted to chat to the children.

We are excited for our busy week next week! We’ve got a trip to Curve to see Giraffes Can’t Dance, a Christmas craft decorations morning, a Christmas fair, Santa visit, Christmas dinner and Christmas jumper day.
